Born from the meeting between the Franco-Syrian singer Climène Zarkan and the guitarist
Baptiste Ferrandis, Sarāb - mirage in Arabic - is a musical edifice that combines rock,
modern jazz and traditional Arabic music that plays with borders and
genres. The duo quickly transformed into a six-headed creature, where each∙e became∙e
essential to musical creation.
Robinson Khoury's trombone binds with the voice, and navigates between scales
Oriental and European, between ornamentation and a personal technique.
It is with the trombone and singing that we find the horizontality of Arabic music,
turned upside down by the rich harmonic verticality of guitar and piano.
Sarāb plays between tradition and today's music. Their first songs
arranged, very written revolve around love, this subject that binds the entire planet.
A particular window opens "Tiri" a song on Mahmud Darwish's poem,
Palestinian poet who speaks of freedom. This open window will bring the desire to write
on other important and committed themes, such as the question of the relationship to the other
-of the fear of the stranger-, of feminism, of the current state of the earth and of the future.
After the release of their first album in 2019, they return with "Arwāh Hurra" - souls
libre -, which extends the musical explorations of the first and confronts the fractures
societies, both Arab and European.
"Sarāb's music is nourished by a lively, indomitable energy, it summons our
meaning to enter into active meditation or meditation action or meditate, premeditate...
I don't know anymore... where are we? In a concert hall? In our living room?
Among the dunes of an endless but suddenly familiar desert?"
